Alejandro Valverde will almost certainly start the Tour de France on June 30 as leader of his team Movistar. This the team announced on Thursday.

Together with Juan Jose Cobo, the winner of the Vuelta a EspaƱa last year, the Spaniard is one of the spearheads of the Movistar team this summer.

Other contenders for success in the selection are sprinter Jose Joaquin Rojas, who last year battled for the green jersey with Mark Cavendish, and climber Rui Costa, who triumphed in the stage to Super-Besse in 2011.

The selection also includes David Arroyo, Ruben Plaza, Imanol Erviti and Jose Ivan Gutierrez, Vladimir Karpets and Vasil Kirijenka. One rider will not make the team.
