World Cup DH Champ Aaron Gwin Takes Double Victory in Super D and DH at Shimano Winter Series Round 3

IRVINE, Calif. (February 7, 2012) – World Cup Champion and Trek World Racing team rider Aaron Gwin dominated both Super D and DH at last weekend’s Third round of the Shimano Winter Series at Fontana.

An occasional competitor at Fontana, this was Gwin’s first Fontana’s Super D race so he really didn’t know what to expect. Riding his Trek Slash trail bike outfitted with a full XT build, he found out that the Super D was to his liking “The Super D course was awesome this weekend. It was fun doing a more relaxed race with all your buddies. Not to mention its great training!” noted Gwin.

Team Hyper’s Waylon Smith, who won the previous two Super D races, made a couple small mistakes and couldn’t make up the time on Gwin, but still finished a close 2nd. Smith was followed closely by the up and coming talented ODI Trek Satellite team rider Jon Buckell. A few seconds back was Smith’s Hyper teammate Eric Carter. The top 4 riders were all riding full Shimano Deore XT equipped bikes with XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleurs.

Sunday’s Downhill podium was an all Shimano affair with Gwin taking the win in dominating fashion by besting second place Team Hyper rider Eric Carter by 3.34 seconds. Third and fourth places went to KHS team riders Kevin Aiello and current National Champion Logan Bingelli. Rounding out the podium was Gwin’s Trek World Racing teammate Neko Mulally.
