Gravel racing is a celebration of endurance, grit, and the open road's endless possibilities. It requires the high-paced speed of road racing combined with the resilience to conquer unpredictable terrain and natural obstacles off the bike. We developed our first S-PHYRE gravel racing shoe with a revolutionary pedaling system that helps you channel every ounce of effort into seamless, efficient pedaling across vast distances.

New challenges need new solutions.

Gravel pedaling systems, like components, must work flawlessly and efficiently. Power must be transferred directly and reliably from the legs, through the shoes, to the pedals. Road racing shoes with SPD-SL would be the logical choice for optimal pedaling efficiency. But what about when you need to dismount to cross a stream or hike over unrideable terrain? Even when pushing your bike, you want to avoid any unnecessary loss, no matter how small.

The next logical choice is XC shoes with rubber soles and spike pins for better walking performance. While this SPD system offers excellent off-bike stability, it may not deliver optimal pedaling efficiency and stability over long distances at race speeds.

Our new S-PHYRE gravel racing shoes expertly combine the advantages of road and XC pedaling systems, with several unique benefits of their own.

Pontoon Pedaling System

Stable, Adjustable, Replaceable

In the early days of clipless road cycling, long, thin blocks were added to either side of the SPD cleat to improve walkability.

This approach inspired the design of the new pontoon system we are introducing with RX910. Our pontoons combine SPD-SL's pedal engagement with SPD's off-the-bike stability to support you throughout every part of a gravel race. They ensure you can pedal efficiently and powerfully through endless dusty gravel paths while being ready for river crossings or rocky sections where you might need to push your bike without missing a beat.

While standard SPD shoes must leave space between the sole blocks to allow for step-in and cleat adjustment, the new pontoon system ensures solid contact in any position. Their easily replaceable design means racers can swap in fresh pontoons before an event to provide steady contact without needing new shoes.
