What is XTR Di2 for e-MTB?

At its core, the XTR M9200 Di2 system for e-MTB is about precision shifting, durable drivetrain design, and intelligent integration with your electric bike’s system.

A direct-wired RD-M9260 rear derailleur draws power from the main bike battery while maintaining its lightning-fast wireless Di2 shifting. The same robust survivability and intuitive shifter, but with increased connectivity and a shared power source—the RD-M9260 complements a premier e-MTB experience.

Key features include:

  • Wireless Di2 shifter (clean cockpit, minimal cables)
  • Robust design with an Impact Recovery Function
  • Derailleur powered by the e-bike’s main battery with lightning-fast wireless shifting
  • Advanced shift modes like AUTO SHIFT and FREE SHIFT
  • Compatibility with Shimano’s 12-speed HYPERGLIDE+ and 11-speed LINKGLIDE drivetrains
  • E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app customization
  • World Cup-proven XTR enduro brakes optimized for e-MTB loads

This is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s a highly modular platform designed to accommodate various rider styles, terrain types, and e-MTB powertrains.

Understanding the Wireless Di2 System

The Di2 system is Shimano’s electronic shifting technology. With this update, it now includes wireless connection between the rear derailleur and shift levers —removing cockpit clutter for wireless shifting—while retaining a wired connection between the derailleur and the battery to ensure reliable power and performance in harsh conditions.

Why wireless in the cockpit?

  • Less cable routing
  • Simpler setup
  • Easier maintenance

Why is it wired at the rear?

  • Stable power supply from the e-bike’s main battery
  • That means you have one less battery to worry about

Two Drivetrains, Two Philosophies

Shimano offers two distinct drivetrain options to match your riding style and terrain preferences:

12-speed HYPERGLIDE+

  • Built for fast, crisp, race-level shifting
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Shifts smoothly under high torque
  • Ideal for cross-country racers and aggressive trail riders

11-speed LINKGLIDE

  • Built for longevity and consistency
  • Smoother shifts under load
  • Lower wear rate, especially under e-MTB torque
  • Perfect for all-day riders, commuters, or anyone putting in massive mileage

Automatic Shifting

One of the hallmarks of Di2 for e-MTB is its ability to shift for you.

AUTO SHIFT

This system uses onboard sensors to measure cadence, torque, and speed. Based on real-time inputs, it automatically selects the ideal gear—just like a car’s automatic transmission.

  • No need to think about when to shift
  • Keeps cadence in your sweet spot
  • Especially useful on technical climbs, stop-start riding, or fatigue-heavy days

FREE SHIFT

This feature allows you to shift gears while not pedaling. That means:

  • You can change gears while descending
  • You can coast into a corner and exit in the right gear
  • You’re always prepared for the next acceleration

These two technologies are now available on both 11-speed and 12-speed drivetrains, thanks to updates in chain stabilization and cassette tooth profiles.

Available in either the lightweight, fast-shifting 12-speed HYPERGLIDE+ (RD-M9260-12) or the durable, smooth-shifting 11-speed LINKGLIDE (RD-M9260-11L) options.

Both are now fully compatible with FREE SHIFT and AUTO SHIFT technologies. This is accomplished through a new design structure of the RD-M9260, which allows for more chain wrap on the pulley wheels and stronger chain stabilization, as well as updated cassette tooth profiles on the HYPERGLIDE+ cassette.

Smart Controls

The new Di2 shifter isn’t just a button—it’s a command center.

  • Wireless connection to the derailleur
  • Programmable third button: use it to toggle AUTO SHIFT, control a third-party GPS computer, or trigger another function
  • Multi-shift capability: hold down to shift multiple gears at once
  • Designed for tactile feedback and intuitive use in gloves, on rough terrain, or at high speed

You can customize all functions using Shimano’s E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app, which connects via Bluetooth and lets you fine-tune settings before or during a ride.

Braking Power Meets the Demands of e-MTB

With heavier bikes and steeper, longer descents, braking becomes more critical on an e-MTB. Shimano’s XTR M9220 enduro brakes are engineered for this reality.

  • Four-piston calipers deliver maximum stopping force
  • Updated low-viscosity oil and seals
  • Reliable bit point in all temperatures and trail conditions
  • Heat management keeps fade at bay—even on Alpine descents
  • Refined lever feel with a sharp bite point and linear modulation
  • Lever ergonomics optimized for finger fatigue and modulation on extended descents

These brakes have been tested on the E-EDR circuit (the enduro series for e-MTBs) and provide World Cup-level control and safety.

Built to Endure

Every component in the XTR M9200 system has been designed with durability in mind.

  • Chainlines optimized for e-MTB frame spacing
  • Crash-resistant derailleur construction
  • Water-resistant connections
  • Chain stabilizer to minimize slap and drops in rough terrain

The XTR group was not just upgraded—it was reimagined for the unique loads, wear patterns, and performance demands of e-MTB riders.

Why XTR for e-MTB?

Here’s what XTR Di2 brings to your e-MTB:

  • Seamless integration with your e-bike
  • Unmatched brake power and heat resistance
  • Lightweight, modular design options
  • Future-ready customization via the E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app and wireless updates

It’s not just about shifting gears. It’s about simplifying decisions so you can focus on the flow, terrain, and ride farther, faster, with more confidence.

With XTR Di2, Shimano isn’t just giving e-MTB riders more gears. We’re giving them a more intelligent, more intuitive way to ride.
