SHIMANO STEPS stands for SHIMANO Total Electric Power System. The development of the component group is based on the SHIMANO idea of perfect integration on the one hand, and the thought that an e-bike should still primarily be a bicycle on the other. This should include comfortable and natural handling and riding behavior as well as well-balanced power development when pedaling. The SHIMANO STEPS concept enables cyclists to combine the experience of nature and healthy exercise with exceptionally smooth engine support.

    When it comes to optimal performance off-road, you want a light, agile and nimble ride. At 2.6kg, the EP800 DU weighs 300 grams less than predecessor drive units. It is truly one of the lightest drive units available and delivers best-in-class power for its weight.

E-bike DI2 Internal Geared Hub Automatic Shifting (INTER-8/INTER-5E)

INTER5 E E-BIKE DESIGN

EP800/E6100 and E5000 series drive units in combination with a DI2-compatible 8/5 speed internal geared hub offer full automatic shifting. The SHIMANO STEPS system automatically selects and shifts into the optimum gear, based on the number of crank rotations and speed.

When riders manually shift in auto mode, the SHIMANO STEPS system uses a learning function to recognize the manual shift and automatically fine-tunes future automatic shift timing to the rider’s liking. This offers a stress-free ride, eliminating the need for the rider to worry about whether they’re in the right gear or have to change gears after an abrupt stop.

When walking the bike up a mountain trail, intelligent walk assist automatically adjusts drive unit output torque to keep the bike speed at 4 km/h no matter which gear ratio is used.

Starting with EP800, mechanical walk assist has been improved to the same level as DI2 Intelligent walk assist to make off-the-bike handling even easier for more riders.

Shimano TRAIL mode sets its assist output characteristics to focus on bike control in the fast-changing conditions of MTB. TRAIL mode delivers optimal assist power when riders need the best performance, so you receive the right power at the right time, safe in the knowledge you’ll always have maximum traction and control. Whether tackling loose sand or steep mountain ranges, the drive unit rapidly and seamlessly self-adjusts so you can concentrate fully on the trail ahead.

Why is Shimano TRAIL mode suitable for such a wide range of riding conditions? It provides linear response output assist without sudden changes or idle spinning of output torque by maintaining a consistent output ratio. TRAIL mode optimizes rider control, lowers energy consumption at low input torque, and provides additional support to power up the trail when the rider pushes harder.

To get you out there riding, we’ve pre-loaded two profiles with three adjustable modes* that are accessible via your display and can be set to match the rider's needs. For example, Profile 1 can be set for more typical commuting and light trails, while Profile 2 can be maxed out for the most intense or demanding routes.
