History

While now recognized as the pinnacle of premium shifting performance, Shimano Di2 was, at its inception, designed to enhance the riding experience for all cyclists. In 2001, Di2 debuted with NEXAVE C910, a beginner-friendly comfort bicycle components that simplified riding with automatic shifting. The NEXAVE C910 system also included an electronically controlled suspension option that automatically adjusted settings according to road conditions and riding speed.

Since that first introduction two decades ago, Shimano Di2 technology has evolved to offer the most advanced shifting experience for a wide range of rider types and riding styles including road, city, mountain bike, and gravel.

Shimano Di2 Hardware Technology

Comprised of small junctions, wires, batteries, and mechanical units, Shimano Di2 looks and feels like a simple system, but it's packed with intricate functions and leading-edge technology. The Di2 platform is complex with many important pieces that must work seamlessly together to achieve Shimano's hallmark precise shift action.
Mechanical units - The small Di2 mechanical units in the front and rear derailleurs precisely control the movement of each derailleur to provide a perfect, crisp shift every time. The powerful, lightweight motors deliver faster and more reliable shifting in all conditions and all terrain.

Di2 Battery

Di2 Battery

Di2 was first introduced with an externally mounted battery. But soon afterwards updates included an internal battery option that tucks away inside a bike frame or seat post for convenience and a sleek look. The lightweight, lithium-ion Di2 battery delivers exceptional battery life for less frequent charging; ranging from weeks to months depending on riding habits.

D-FLY

D-FLY

Shimano D-FLY is the bridge between Di2 hardware and software technology. They enable connectivity between Di2 systems and ANT+/Bluetooth®LE compatible accessories like cycling GPS computers and lights. They also create a wireless connection with Shimano's E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist for smartphones and so riders can customize shifter setup, check for firmware updates, and troubleshoot any component issues.

Shimano Di2 Software Technology

E-TUBE

E-TUBE

With the fastest, most advanced electronic shifting system in cycling, Shimano Di2 delivers unparalleled shifting performance at industry-leading speeds. And just as each component of the Di2 platform has transformed and improved over the years, so too has the software, the brains behind Di2.

The initial Di2 software that paved the way for the connectivity and capabilities of today came in 2010 with the introduction of the E-TUBE platform. Delivering an open system to improve the user experience, E-TUBE increased capabilities and put the control into the rider’s hands. Offering options to update, customize, and troubleshoot hardware, E-TUBE created a user-friendly experience to round out the Di2 system.

Now, the E-TUBE PROJECT software offers a wide range of customization and control at your fingertips thanks to the intuitive E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist for iOS and Android smartphones. Riders can easily connect their bike to the app via a D-FLY Wireless Unit and quickly check for firmware updates, troubleshoot any component issues, connect to compatible Bluetooth® accessories, and customize their Di2 shifting experience with the swipe of a finger.

The Di2 system allows comfort riding by the fusion of Shimano’s traditional mechanical technology and advanced digital technology. The computer-controlled automatic shifting system, the selfadjustable digital suspension for optimum hardness, and three automatic drive modes at your choice. Advanced computer engineering provides a smooth, silent and shockless ride. The Cyber Nexus is characterized by many features including the internal 8-speed automatic system

synchronized with the auto-suspension for quick response. In addition, electric power is supplied from the front hub dynamo to control shifting and suspension realizing an environmentally-friendly system - ECOVISION. We will continue to pursue the development of this self-energizing

and automatic system.

11 internal dynamo magnets

Immediate speed sensor input at 11 signals-per-rotation for instantaneous response to riding conditions. No more wheel magnet systems.
