Whether you’re a motivated racer with top-of-the-podium aspirations or a dedicated backcountry adventurer looking to go deep down dirt roads less traveled, you want your gravel bike and its components to meet your specific needs.

This diversity of desire is fundamental to the gravel cycling experience, where independence and choice are critical components. That’s why SHIMANO GRX, the world's first gravel-specific groupset, aims to provide an array of options to meet your unique goals. The latest example of SHIMANO’s ethos of choice comes via the launch of new, larger GRX chainrings and shorter crank arms, each aimed at delivering optimal gravel bike set-up options.

New SHIMANO GRX chainrings include 44t and 46t to go with existing 40t and 42t offerings. How you employ these new options is entirely up to you. The larger chainrings will have particular appeal to riders who regularly tackle flatter terrain and racers seeking taller top-end gearing to help them stay at the front of the field.

As a refresher, smaller chainrings provide easier gearing for tackling tough climbs or hauling more weight, making them well-suited for gravel bikes used primarily for adventure riding and bikepacking. Conversely, larger chainrings allow riders to reach and maintain higher top speeds and are considered marginally more efficient due to less required chain articulation, which reduces chain friction. No surprise then that larger chainrings are often the choice for more race-oriented gravel bikes.

And just like our other options, SHIMANO’s new GRX chainrings deliver superior chain retention, smoother shifting performance, and long-lasting durability. That’s something that cannot always be said of the myriad after-market options that are typically constructed from softer, less robust material that can wear out more quickly, mainly when used in harsh riding conditions. The new SHIMANO chainrings are also seamlessly compatible with all existing GRX cranksets, including 1x, 2x, 600-series, and 800-series.

SHIMANO is also adding 165mm and 160mm GRX RX810 crank length options to go along with our existing 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm offerings. Launch of these new cranks will be especially welcome news to riders looking to fine-tune their bike fit, as crank length can influence power output, pedaling efficiency, and overall on-bike comfort.

Generally speaking, longer cranks generate greater leverage, which benefits low-cadence, high-torque efforts. Shorter cranks, on the other hand, allow for higher cadence pedaling and may help reduce joint strain. Shorter cranks can also help riders maintain a smoother, more consistent pedal stroke, especially during sustained efforts.

Choosing the right crank length may also improve power transfer by keeping your hip and knee angles within an optimal range throughout your pedal stroke, minimizing inefficiencies and lessening the risk of overuse injuries. Determining your ideal crank length depends on leg length, preferred cadence, and flexibility. Riders with shorter inseams typically benefit from shorter cranks, while those with longer legs often opt for longer options. A professional bike fitter can help you identify your optimal crank length based on personal body measurements, flexibility, and overall performance goals.

Bottom line, no matter how you achieve your optimal gravel bike set-up, SHIMANO GRX continues to provide an array of component choices to help you get there.
